Castanheira at Cork Shack Marvão

Designed with sympathy to the outstanding natural beauty of the rich Portalegre countryside that surrounds it, The Cork Shack - a pair of smartly equipped luxury Ecolodges, patterned after the medieval stone 'choça' roundhouses common to the area - is a sleek and stylish solution for those desirous of cool, calm environs from which to delve into their latest project whilst being inspired by the arresting majesty of the Alentejo landscape.

Everything here - from the exquisite and carefully groomed foliage of the grounds in which the shacks sit (occupied by fruit-bearing trees of cherry, tangerine and fig), to the environmentally friendly and chlorine-free 36ft swimming pool that attends them - seems to exude a certain luxuriant calm.

Each shack, comprised of a 6.5m diameter decagon, is clad in 100% locally sourced cork and sheltered by thatched roofing, providing natural thermal and acoustic insulation to offer a perfectly modulated and secluded work environment.

In contrast to the stunningly innovative design of the accommodation, these smart interiors provide 25sqm of wonderfully classic and uncomplicated space; fully furnished with kingsized/twin bed, desk and seating, and encompassed by vibrant white walls whilst tall glazed double aspect doors look out onto the flourishing and neatly kept greenery outside.

The shacks, attended by a spacious private wooden deck, grant both indoor and outdoor spaces for focused desk work, along with chic modern kitchenettes and bathrooms, ensuring every convenience required for fully self-contained and self-catering accommodation.

Within the grounds, the shaded areas yielded by the fruit, nut and olive trees offer quiet oases away from the desk in which to reflect and rest, whilst the nearby restored traditional well is another delightful feature, making this minimalist and contemporary twist on the region's ancestral abodes a fantastic spot in which to immerse into deep work.

Meet your host

When Dewi and Clare first decided to move from the Greater Lisbon area to this region of the Portalegre that they first fell in love with more than 14 years ago, they were eager to provide visitors the best possible opportunity to share their experience of the area and come to discover the outstanding natural beauty of the province that first beguiled them.

Ardent food and wine lovers from Wales, they're passionate about creating a tranquil space for visitors to unwind, explore and focus in on complex and important work.

The Alentejo is a proud region of rural Portugal, rich with heritage and local industry and teeming with vast breadths of sunny countryside to explore and rest in. Beyond the smart Ecolodges of the Shack, the traditional village of Escusa offers dazzling views of the Monte Roxo hills and wider landscape. The area, nestled along the border of Spain and Portugal amid the resplendent Serra de São Mamede mountain range - a protected 31,000-hectare nature reserve named after Saint Mammes, a 3rd-century child martyr - is a beautifully tranquil highlight of the stunning Portalegre district in which it resides.

Ways to play

The locales of the Alentejo surrounding the accommodation are host to a wide range of activities and experiences to replenish the mind and spark fresh trains of thought.

  • Nature - A railbike system provides a fun and unique way to tour and immerse into the natural surroundings with 2-hour and 4-hour routes available via reservation. For those seeking to connect into the local countryside by more conventional means, a wide selection of walks and hikes extend from the accommodation - with guided maps provided onsite.
  • Inspiration - Marvão, lodged atop the tallest ridge of the Serra de São Mamede just a few minutes away, is a charmingly quaint and beautiful town of gleaming whitewashed walls and cobbled streets - home to the striking medieval Castle of Marvão with its panoramic views, intriguing history and, in the summer, the famous Marvão Music Festival.
  • Learning - Taking in a guided UMM jeep tour to explore a local corking farm or the Dolmens in Serra D'Ossa is an excellent way to be educated on the corking industry that undergirds so much of the region's economy. During the drive, you'll be able to receive academic and hands-on insights from the friendly local tour leaders who proudly call Alentejo home.
  • Discovery - A trip to sample the produce of the vineyards the region is renowned for is a must. Why not venture to the rich stores of the Torre de Palma closeby to taste a tipple for yourself.
  • Play - Opportunities for horse riding, along with Canadian kayaking and paddleboarding can be found nearby.
