The brain science behind contemplation

What is thinking anyway? Neuroscientists describe it like this: thought is comparing what you know with what you’re experiencing. When you’re thinking, your brain is sifting, sorting and categorising the things you’ve encountered your whole life. Which is why busy people, on an eternal collision course with stimuli, are prone to stress, burnout, and exhaustion. Giving your brain time to sift and sort uninterrupted can be transformative for your work and your wellbeing.

Take a break

Time alone helps your creative thinking – reaching a state of ‘constructive internal reflection’ will help you come up with ways to take on challenges and feel calmer.

Get outside

Research into ‘attention restoration theory’ shows that natural environments replenish your bank of attention and refuel your critical thinking engine.

Contemplate and play

Concentration interspersed with periods of play encourages the series of brain states that outputs new ideas. Multitasking and shallow work just breeds burnout.

"Trust your body and psyche more and more and that's how you'll gain your power. It's a process of un-brainwashing yourself."

Dr Helen Weng, neuroscientist

Deep working thinkers

Elizabeth Gilbert's book Eat, Pray, Love is a memoir of self-discovery across continents. Gilbert says that contemplation and travel go hand in hand. "If you are prepared [on your travels] to face (and forgive) some very difficult realities about yourself," she says, "then truth will not be withheld from you."

A surprising proportion of Charles Darwin's workday was reserved just for thinking. Darwin's day included early morning walks to clear his head, a few intense hours in his study, followed by lengthy afternoon walks to mull over challenging ideas. He'd finish up for the day in the early afternoon.

Co-founder of investor platform Robinhood, Vlad Tenev, says contemplation has become core to his way of working. “I’ve become much more deliberate about how I spend my time,” he told Entrepreneur.com. “This involves scheduling time in advance to prepare for important meetings and also just to think.”
